Yesterday, I posted a little vignette about a kid jumping over a fence, which I described as being three feet tall. I passed that fence again this morning, and I thought, Hmmmmm, I think thats more than three feet. I stood next to it and it came up to my shoulder--4 1/2 feet!! Considering the kid who jumped it wasnt a whole lot taller (if he was even that tall), his jump really WAS impressive! Numbers and directions. I can never get either right. Theres a part in DURABLE GOODS about the narrator erasing holes in her paper when she tries to do long division: she put down one number and its too high; she puts down another and its too low. That was me. Sitting at my card table and doing math homework and tearing up and looking out the window and wishing I was a grown up who NEVER had to do math. And look! I became a grown up who STILL has to do math. Badly.
