Yesterday I saw a little Mockingbird fledgling on the ground, - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I saw a little Mockingbird fledgling on the ground, sitting all still, trying to blend in. The first reaction of the people I was with was to pick it up, assuming it fell out of the nest and therefore it will die. NOT SO! Heres why: Nests are not the safe place we like to think of; rather the opposite, its a presentation platter for predators, so little birds get out the nest as soon as they can, without being able to fly yet. They have more opportunities to hide on the ground and the parents continue to feed them. SO IF YOU SEE A BABY BIRD ON THE GROUND, PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE! Unless its in immediate danger or hurt, there is no reason to interfere. Under no circumstances should you take the bird away from the area and kidnap it from its parents. If theres danger, place bird in a shoebox or something and place box in a tree, out of harms way. If injured, google wildlife rehabilitator near me and call for advise. I think its important to add that it is a MYTH that momma birds wont take back their babies after humans have touched them because they smell differently. Please know that most birds dont even have a sense of smell...its a myth. That goes for almost all animal babies. Even the ones that can smell. But that doesnt mean you can go ahead and play and cuddle with them...respect the wild in the wild and play and cuddle with your domesticated pets :).
