Yesterday I spent a fascinating hour with a Saudi student majoring in world history who came into my office to request a private tutor for his stats class. While we waited for the stats tutor to call I asked him for his perspective on the situation in Syria and Iraq. What he said surprised me. He said it is so much bigger than just Palestinians and Israelis. He said what’s really happening with ISIS and more importantly with ISIL is not going to end the cycle of violence and hate is just going to continue. He went on to explain it really started when the British and the French divided up the spoils of World War I the Ottoman Empire. The last time the Arab world had a united Islamic state led by a religious leader, the Ottoman Empire, the caliphate, Germanys ally lost, he explained. British and French rulers knew the Ottoman Empire could shut down the Suez and harass critical shipping lanes, which would destroy European economies. So they needed to ensure no united Arab kingdom ever got in way of their economic and imperial expansion. The Arabs were forced to accept the partitioning agreement, but not without major Arab resentment that still festers today in every Islamist heart. Britain made Israel for the Jewish to escape annihilation by Nazi Germany. Britain drew up a two state Palestine. It wasn’t so much about the Jews, and it wasn’t about the Arabs. The Jewish and Palestinian people are nothing more than pawns in this larger game The ultimate goal of the Arab world is return the Middle East to its Caliphate that is where the difference between ISIS and ISIL comes in. ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIL stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. What modern countries make up the Levant? Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and… Israel.
