Yesterday, I took Gigi to a local nursing home with her Girl - TopicsExpress

Yesterday, I took Gigi to a local nursing home with her Girl Scouts troop. They brought the residents outside and had a hotdog cookout and Easter Egg hunt. The residents looked mostly not with it but I wanted to reach out and help and do what I could. There was table of three women. One had a bit of a spark in her eye, and we chatted up a big ol storm about music and life in general. The more I spoke with her, the more I realized that while the spark was there, he reality was a bit skewed. But she was nice, and we had a good time. Across the table were two women. One woman was insistent that I keep her in good supply of cold Cokes. And could she smoke? I told her that I wasnt sure as I wiped the mustard from her face. I was doing good. I could do this. I made my way back around to the first lady. I looked across the table at the third woman. She was slumped over and was wearing a maskless football helmet of sorts. She looked up at me, intently focused on me. Mama? Mama. I went around the table and knelt beside her and took her by the hand. I looked into her eyes. She had pinpoint pupils inside her soft, brown eyes. I had coffee, and it burnt me. You said I cant have coffee. The caffeine gives me seizures. I stroked her hand; tears welled up in my eyes. Mama, I had a bad seizure today. The tears fell in waves. Im so sorry. Im so sorry. I soothed her. I rubbed her hand. She closed her eyes and her breathing evened out. I stayed crouched there for a moment, doing my best to regain some composure. Failing miserably. Did I look like her mama? Does she call everyone Mama? I dont know, but for that brief moment in time, she believed me to be her mama. And I grieved for her like she was my own daughter. I hurt for her. For a moment, I was able to be a balm for her. There is a balm in Gilead that makes the wounded whole. As Christians, we carry that balm with us. You are an arm. You are a foot. We are the body of Christ. Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
