Yesterday I walked by a house that had a wheel barrel sitting in front of it filled with carrots and other veggies so fresh they were still covered with mother earth. There was a big sign on it that read, FREE and a supply of plastic bags hanging off the handle. I froze for a moment, reading and re-reading the one word, a little dazed and confused by its meaning. Free? Free? Then I looked around and up at the house like a dork. Then as reality sunk in, I thought, Hmm. These things are FREE! Its okay to just TAKE SOME! Wow, how cool! so I decided to help myself. I stood there for undoubtedly a few more dorky seconds, looking at the bags and back at the plastic bag I already held with junk from the dollar store and decided to just use my own bag. I selected FOUR carrots cause I didnt wanna be a pig and I was still trying to wrap my slow brain around the whole, Its okay - theyre FREE, they WANT people to take them! thing ... and then waved up at the house and yelled, THANK YOU! to probably no one since probably no one even saw me out there, but oh well I do stuff like that. Then I got home a bit later .. wrote my daughter an email and told her about the coolness that was Those People .. and then I decided to eat a carrot. THATS when I thought, Hey. What if they DID something to them? I mean, they probably DIDNT ..but they COULD have. People are weird sometimes. Who gives away stuff these days?! Ya hear about people doing horrible things to food!! It could happen! They may be CRAZY! Then I thought, Yeah, somebody probably is. YOU. Eat the freakin carrot already. Its fine. And so I did. And thats a peek into my brain. Scary huh? Happy Halloween.
