Yesterday, a Syrian friend (who recently lost a cousin under torture in Assad prisons) privately expressed anger at me for supporting and promoting Al-Awda group when some of its prominent leaders publicly and shamelessly defend Assad and excuse his crimes against the Syrian people. My answer is that I proudly support a just cause and a good organization doing work of justice (I am a paid member), but not necessarily individuals who might lack morals or principles. It is unfair and foolish to punish the Palestinian people and their (rather our) cause for their freedom and justice because of the mistakes and bad judgment of a few Palestinian activists with some narrow nationalistic or Marxist agenda. For the record, overwhelmingly, Palestinians in Syria, in Palestine, and in the US stand in full support of their brethren in Syria, Egypt, Kashmir, and the rest of the Muslim and Arab World who are struggling for their freedom and dignity. What else did you expect from a people that has suffered occupation, repression, and injustice at the hands of Israelis for over half a century? Freedom, human rights, justice, and human dignity are God-given rights bestowed upon every human being and nation. Never allow borders or politics to determine where, when, and who can enjoy those rights. In the Quran, Allah/God says: O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and he careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.
