Yesterday, a friend sent me an article entitled something like “18 things your boy should know before he turns 18.” And, while I appreciated the sentiment of the list (and the fact that my friend thought about me), most of the stuff on the list was nonsense.. Here is my list (off top of my head while I make breakfast) please add to it if you feel inclined- as always, I am open to advice and counsel when it comes to parenting :). No particular order (LIST FOR GIRLS UP NEXT). - “boys will be boys” is BS and just an excuse for not taking responsibility for your actions - Always take responsibility for your actions and words – if you know you are going to have to, you tend to be more thoughtful about your words and actions. - It is hard to correct actions with words but learn to offer sincere apologies anyway - Condoms aren’t just for birth control – learn to use them EVERY SINGLE TIME - Respecting a woman starts at home with mom and siblings and is something you do in public AND in private - treat every woman (even strangers) the way you would want someone to treat your mom, sister, grandmother, etc.. - Learn how to defend yourself BUT Never raise a hand to strike someone else (woman or man) unless you or someone else is in serious danger.. And, no, being embarrassed or dissed does not constitute grave danger.. - “no means no” - EVERY SINGLE TIME – even if you suspect that a young lady doesn’t really mean it, you have to take her on her word (we’ll put that on top things a woman should learn before 18) - There is no such thing as “woman’s work”/ “man’s work” - That being said, don’t wait for someone to ask you to do something – if it is full, empty it, if it is messy, clean it up - How to wash and fold laundry, - How to change a tire, - 5 meals you can make well - Learn how to say I love you to the people you love - Learn how to be considerate of other people and their feelings - Being cool NEVER happens at other peoples’ expense - Figure out the stuff you like to do and do those things often. - If you have a friend who tries to get you to do things you know you shouldn’t, this person is NOT a friend and they will not step up when you get busted– a friend looks out for you!! - Learn to be a good/ honest friend – even when it is inconvenient.. - Learn to take care of your teeth – we aren’t sharks! - Honor your word!
