Yesterday afternoon we received the statistics for the Humane - TopicsExpress

Yesterday afternoon we received the statistics for the Humane Society of Vero Beach, for the months of June and July 2014. The charts pictured on this post are the actual charts that were submitted to Indian River County by HSVB, as part of their monthly invoicing for the Animal Housing Contract. We received these records from the County Attorney’s Office through a public records request. These charts reflect HSVB’s “Outcomes,” which means what happened to the animals there for that month. I have very carefully taken these numbers and filtered out certain things to better reflect what they mean, just with cats & dogs. I took certain categories out, to more fairly reflect the “real data” we have been talking about. By leaving certain numbers in, it makes certain percentages higher that reflect negatively and unfairly on HSVB. The numbers and percentages I have extracted from these two charts are, what I consider, “real data” about what happened in these two months with cats and dogs, to include kittens and puppies. Please remember, I do not know the reasons for why these numbers are what they are. I do not know how many of these were “feral cats” or “behavior issues” or “sickness” or anything like that. These are just numbers and statistics, but remember, they equate into life and death for a several hundred animals. JUNE 2014: Total Outcome: 372 (after filters) Euthanasia: 217 (after filters) Adoptions: 81 (after filters) Euthanasia Rate: 58.3% Adoption Rate: 21.8% Others: (categories I filtered out) 19.9% JULY 2014: Total Outcome: 393 (after filters) Euthanasia: 198 (after filters) Adoptions: 99 (after filters) Euthanasia Rate: 50.4% Adoption Rate: 25.2% Others: (categories I filtered out) 24.4% As a citizen of Indian River County, these numbers are the ones you need to know, as related to Euthanasia vs. Adoption of animals. As I have offered many times before, I would welcome an opportunity to sit down with anyone and explain these numbers and what they mean in layman’s terms. These numbers and percentages are unacceptable to the Animal Protection Coalition of Indian River County. We all have to do a better job and try other things to stop this constant flow of innocent animals dying. The Coalition is moving forward aggressively with some of these “other things.” Van DeMars, (772) 501-5197 or email: vanpdemars@aol
