Yesterday as we were leaving a village along the Rio Negro near Manaus, we saw a man with a brace and shriveled leg. I asked him in English if it was Polio and he responded in English that he had polio in 1981 while he was an exchange student in the US. He was hospitalized in Shriner Hospital in Springfield Mass. He lives in Manaus and has very little opportunity to speak English---although his skill was very good. I gave him my End Polio Now pin and we talked about the final steps in the eradication of polio. Perhaps a new Rotarian for Manaus.
