Yesterday at kindergarten pick up these pearls of wisdom were cast.... Charlie, did you know that my friend Sasha has 2 mommies? shared Naya (5 yrs.) knowingly. No, thats not twue Naya! She cant have 2 mommies. Snaps back a determined Charlie Rose (3 yrs). Yes you can. Some people have 2 mommies Charlie. Some people have 2 daddies too. Like I have 2 mommies. And you have 2 mommies; Momma S. and our mommy. Explains Janayah.(referring to her bio Mom and myself) I do not Naya. You dont even know about me! snaps C.R. Yes you do Chuck! We have 2 mommies because mom adopted us, right mom? Up to this point I have been a silent onlooker watching through my rear view mirror and listening in rapture on what I was sure would be a deeply revealing conversation as to where these 2 precious beings were in their comprehension around adoption and the world in general.... So I hesitated bringing my 2 cents in and wanted the conversation to stay within their dawning world of comprehension. Careful of both of their processes, I smiled back and acknowledged Naya by saying, I did adopt you and I am so lucky to be your momma. You see Charlie, Mom adopted me AND you! And Charlie Rose, my intensely opinionated firecracker, now very obviously angered by the conversation roared; Some people dont yike to talk about dat Naya! Some people dont want dat! And there it is..... You could have heard a pin drop. The moment was steeped in such poignant truth that even my 3 and 5 year olds acknowledged its power with several moments of silence staring out their respective car windows. And I too sat in the quiet, feeling the sharp stab of heartache from the raw, honest, clarity of a child. I watched in my rear view mirror wondering how 2 children could process the same experience in such vastly different ways and how their paths would twist and turn flavored by their perceptions. And then, Janayahs face lit up in recognition and she turned to C.R exclaiming, Chuck, how bout you say it your way, and I will say it mine! And with that, C.Rs eyes twinkled and she scooped up her sisters hand and simply responded with, Okay Naya. And in a moment, all the misunderstanding and separation was replaced with connection and love. Each one having their truth heard and witnessed. You do it your way. And I will do it mine. Yes Naya. Lets do that.
