Yesterday our youth were given a tour of St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN. A woman from the Admissions department for the University told our youth of scholarships, grants and financial aid opportunities. After she spoke, the Director of Admissions, a man who identified himself as Joe Herrera, spoke, not even affording our people the respect of getting out of his chair to address our party, and told our youth if they cannot afford the tuition costs at St. Thomas University, that they should not apply. They only want people who can afford to go there. The way he spoke to our group was disrespectful. When he spoke to our rep on the phone he was solicitous, but when he saw our party, it was a different story. The message our Native Hawaiian youth got is that: (1). St. Thomas University is an elitist university that doesnʻt want poor people or minorities or even middle class people, which is contrary to Catholic socian teaching. Recommendations: If you are poor, or even middle class, do not apply to St. Thomas. If you are a minority or indigenous person, do not apply to St. Thomas except if you are of the same priviledged class as Mr. Herrera. This is obviously a university that does not value the cultural diversity that our Hawaiian youth or any minority or indigenous youth can bring.
