Yesterday paddling in the open ocean at Edisto Island, SC, was such a blast! We learned how to deal with the surf. Getting thru the waves and into the kayak can be kinda tricky. Roy got swamped on his first try! Knowing how to get a swamped kayak righted was something of a challenge. I rolled myself, playing around in an effort to stand up. We were successful in our deep water righting by pulling the water filled boat upside down across the bow of the other boat, letting most of the water drain out, rolling it back upright, then sliding it back on to the water. Next task - how to get out of the water and back into the kayak! Found a couple of different options and no, I did not swamp again! While we were out a we got surrounded by a HUGE school of fish - they pop up at the surface as they move in such a tight formation, we could actually see the outline of the mass! This brought out pelicans, osprey, gulls, and our biggest thrill, DOLPHINS! We knew they were about, as we watched them from the beach when we first arrived, but to see them swimming close by, was a treat. We learned about wind, waves, currents, and mostly about feeling comfortable in open water. Practicing with our paddling skills, we spent the better part of the day enjoying the freedom of the ocean. Our final adventure and the most fun, riding the surf back into the beach! It was so exciting (and funny) we didi it quite a few times. Some attempts worked out beautifully, others not so much, like it generally does end well when you get turned sideways to the wave! You get rolled. I found this a giggle filled experience! Dragged the kayak on the beach emptied it, and went out for another try. Tiring, thrilling, interesting, funny, and educational, it was one of the best days yet! We left Edisto and ended up cruisin right thru Georgia and into north Florida. Today is a land day. Amelia Island is beautiful for running and cycling. Our last play day before we arrive for the Bar Mitzvah festivities with all my family for the weekend.
