Yesterday saw the Grand Final of this years Scierra Pairs which took place at Rutland Water, where 65 pairs battled it out for the biggest cash prize in UK Fly Fishing. There was £3750 up for grabs along with top class medals, salvas and the brand new trophy, all kindly supplied by Premier Trophies. We were greeted with sunny conditions and a gentle northerly wind. The fishing the day before was tough for most anglers as the lake was flat calm and again very sunny. So word was going around that match day wasnt going to be a walk in the park. However we were pleasantly surprised to see anglers into fish right from the off with pairs catching on their very first cast. After going out in the safety boat we saw that the boats were pretty much spread all over the 3,500 acre lake. Some pairs opted to target the resident fish in places such as Manton, Hide away bay, Dickinsons and the Mound. Where as other boats when straight after the stocked fish in the Main Basin and in front of the Lodge, all the way up to Old Hall. Fish were caught from all over to produce a staggering pair rod average of 11 fish, and an individual rod average of 5.7 with a total of 736 fish caught - with most pairs weighing in their best fish over the magical 3lb mark. A credit to Rutland Water. With such a strong field heading out, this match was always going to take something special to win it. And boy did that prove the case with Gareth Jones and Tony Cartwright landing back at the jetty at 15:35 with an unbelievable bag of Rutland Water Fishing Lodge finest resident Trout. Their 16 fish tipped the scales round to an impressive 37lb 14oz with their best fish being 4lb 7oz. These were the only pair to fish the weed beds and land there bag limit. Gareth and Tony fished down the North Arm on Floating lines with Nymphs and Buoyant Fry imitations on the point. Over all with time bonus their final weight was 42lb 6oz. 2lb 6oz clear of the field too pick up the biggest Cash Prize of the day of £1500, Gold Medals plus the brand new Scierra Pairs Trophy. The two boats to be back first at 13:45 were separated by a mear 2oz for 2nd and 3rd place. After taking their fish pulling sinking lines with blobs and boobies were Brad Mackie and Steve Cochrane who managed to cling on to Second place and £1000. Iain Barr and Ed Foster caught there fish on similar tactics fishing around Whitwell Area. After taking their first 15 fish in quick succession. They really struggled to take there last fish, after what seemed a few hours, they slipped their net under the 16th fish and were heading back to the dock. This earnt them the Bronze medals 3rd position and a nice cheque for £750. Well done lads. They were closely followed in by Gary Morris and Lloyd Pallet who arrived back at the jetty at 13:50. Just missing out on a early time bonus, losing them 8 ounces which sadly cost them 2nd place overall. How ever finishing 4th they were still in the money landing a cheque of £500.
