Yesterday the U.S. Chamber of Commerce posted on its website a letter signed by 251 business associations and organizations urging Congress “to pass a Continuing Resolution to ensure the uninterrupted funding of the federal government into the next fiscal year and to act expeditiously to raise the nation’s debt limit.” The letter went on “It is not in the best interest of the employers, employees or the American people to risk a government shutdown that will be economically disruptive and create even more uncertainties for the U.S. economy.” Among those signing the letter were the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and, of course, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. So, while the American people and American business wanted to avoid a government shutdown, Representative Randy Hultgren consistently joined in Tea Party efforts to use the threat of a shutdown to achieve unrelated legislative ends. The House could have passed a clean resolution to keep the government operating and dealt with those other issues in a more appropriate way. In the early morning hours today, after the shutdown had already begun, the House Republicans decided to propose that the House and Senate begin negotiations on a continuing resolution to keep the government open. The Senate has sought a joint conference committee on the budget 18 times over recent months, but the Republican-controlled House refused on each occasion. The House is clearly broken, and we need change it. Badly.
