Yesterday was World Alzheimers Day. Here, some facts to remember. 1. More than 600.000 people suffer from this disease in Spain and an estimated of 200.000 patients are still undiagnosed, according to the Spanish Society of Neurology. In the world, it affects 44 million people. 2. Each year about 40.000 new cases of Alzheimers are diagnosed in Spain. 3. The number of people affected by this disease will be increased very significantly in the coming decades, to the point that there may be more than 1.5 million affected people living in Spain in 2050. 4. The disease generates an annual cost of 36.000 million euros in Spain, an amount that will be the double in the next twenty years in line with the increase of affected people that we expect. 5. An Alzheimers patient requires, on average, close to 70 hours per week of special care and, in most cases, over 80%, the patients caregivers are often family members. 6. 50% of patients are older than 85 years. 7. At present there is no effective treatment for Alzheimers, which clinical trials have failed to 99.6%, according to a study by Cleveland Clinic.
