Yesterday was a big day for our gal, Annabelle – she had her much needed surgery! As some of you already know, Annabelle is a lovely 22 year old Belgian mare that recently arrived at Nevins Farm. Many of the years of her life were spent as a working horse for the Amish before she was sold to a new owner who then surrendered her to us after he was no longer able to care for her. After some evaluation, we realized that she was suffering from a painful dental disease that caused her teeth to rot at the roots. An extensive and expensive surgery was recommended for her, requiring the removal of the effected teeth. Check out our video of her as she got ready for her big procedure! We are happy to report that even after a long and stressful day yesterday, Annabelle already appears to be much more comfortable. We are soaking her grain so that it is easy for her to eat and she is already eating like a champ – faster and more comfortably than we’ve ever seen! We are feeling optimistic that this kind and gentle mare will now have a new lease on life and that she’ll be able to enjoy her golden years pain-free.
