Yesterday was a long sad day of goodbyes and thank yous. MHFBF Dave Ladik posted a very poignant tribute to Lou that we think will make you smile today. _______ When I was 18, I headed off to college armed with a HUGE pair of speakers and the music of my high school parking lot. Zepplin, Skynard and a couple of other southern rock bands named after different guns. My few breaks from that took the form of the California sound. Cassettes of The Eagles and Jackson Browne were the soundtrack to my drive to Iowa that fall. Sometime during freshman year, my roommate, David Sturges from Holmdel, NJ, brought Lou Reed’s Street Hassle into the room. We wore the grooves off that record. Okay, maybe not Lou’s best, but it was the best to me. More importantly, that record led me to Transformer and Berlin — to The Velvets. Then to Iggy. Then to Television. That summer I met some new friends that were miles ahead of me on that journey. Greg Schalla and Jeff Pezzati turned me on to amazing new music and took me to legendary Chicago joints like Oz and O’Banions. Style points to both those dudes too. Both helped turn me into the fop that I am today. Over the years music has brought people in and out of my life. David Behrel and Ric Menck, the first two people I met that loved the Dictators as much as I did. That dude Tim at the record store (I hope you all had a Tim at a record store somewhere) Jon Oulman, the magneplanar speakers are like the candy man, and do help make everything sound better. (And much more help on the dandy front, Jon.) Shows with Dan VB, shows with girls — oh, I love the shows with girls. Suzanne, you turned me on to X. For that alone I will always love you. Elaina, thanks for taking me to Keith Richards at The Beacon — twice. Still not sure how you explained that one to your boyfriend. It’s a lot of years later. There are still a few things on my musical bucket list, but most of the boxes have been ticked. Some of ‘em more than once. For the most part I’ve made my living in or around the music that I love. Couldnt be happier about that. And it really is all thanks to David Sturges and that Lou Reed record. People say bullshit things all the time, like, “Oh, that record changed my life,” and I always either yawn or sort of pretend vomit. Guess what? That record changed my life. So thanks Lou. Thanks for almost 50 years of music. Thanks for each and every record — even Loutallica. Thanks for Perfect Day, which is as perfect today as it was in 1972. Don’t rest in peace though. Continue to rage and challenge the man wherever you’re headed. The RIP thing. I don’t think it would make you happy. youtube/watch?v=QYEC4TZsy-Y #daveladik #loureed #perfectday #MTV #pitchfork
