Yesterday was quarterly interpreter liaison day at Cambridgeshire Constabulary, and there was a good turnout as usual from interpreters, all keen to engage in dialogue. The meeting was Chaired by a DCI and facilitated by Katrina as usual. The agenda was as wide ranging as normal, and dialogue free, frank and friendly. The Chairman and Secretary of the Association both attended, and Alan kindly agreed to take notes of the meeting. This is the sort of relationship which is the future of Justice interpreting. None of us shies away from uncomfortable truths and together we look for solutions. The result is value for the taxpayer, a quality service for the constabulary and a secure future for interpreters. It is a privilege for the APCI to be involved in this, as we have from the beginning, and setting the example for professional management of Justice interpreting in an arena where an ideological campaign has attempted to crush professionalism. The message is that professional interpreters will not be crushed, and the fraudulent ideology which has caused chaos in the Courts and Tribunals is not just bad but also entirely wrong and misguided. The disaster that is the MoJ Framework Agreement should be terminated.
