Yesterday was the anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovichs birth. Here is a superb recording of the composer playing his Second Piano Concerto - which is unfortunately not played nearly as often as the First - with the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française expertly conducted by André Cluytens, which was on one of the first historical LPs I found in my teens. Clearly quite a skilled pianist, Shostakovich plays strong rhythmic bite, a beautiful and varied tonal palette, impressive technical command (those octaves!), and wonderful legato phrasing.
