Yesterday was the birthday of a man that had a profound affect on my life. We were born at very different time periods so I never met him. It was Eugene Field, who in a small way, was responsible for launching my speaking career. Had he not written the poem, Jest Fore Christmas, I might not have fallen in love with the spoken word. Of course, there were others, like my teacher, Mrs. Hargrove, who required everyone in our class to memorize and deliver a poem or speech in front of the entire class. And there was my mom who guided me every step of the way. When I was told I had to recite a poem in class, I was beside myself with fear. My sweet mother was my cheerleader. She told me I could do it and she coached me. She had me practice over and over. She taught me how to use gestures and make eye contact. She taught me the importance of pauses and vocal variety. After my poem was recited in class, Mrs. Hargrove told me that I did very well. She saw a glimmer possibility that I didnt see in myself. She encouraged me to enter the school speech contest. I won there and went on to the county contest, which I also won with my mom coaching me every step of the way. So, happy birthday Mr. Field. A big thank you to you, Mrs. Hargrove and my mother all who helped create my destiny.
