Yesterday we explored Jefferson City with the St. Louis - Stuttgart Volkssport Club. The walk point of contacts, Dave and Edna, joined us from St. Louis, Barb and Chris came from Kansas City and Pat and Missy drove from Southern Missouri to walk with us. The humidity tracked us down once again. The Capitol building is Missouris third in Jefferson City. The first two burned down. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley. Inside the capitol over 40 lunettes (half-moon shaped paintings) illustrate Missouris resources and history. Barb and Missy took us to the third floor to make sure we didnt miss the room-size mural in the House Lounge. Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton painted A Social History of Missouri. It was spectacular! Im so glad we didnt miss it. Outside the collection of sculptures continued to portray Missouris history. The Lewis and Clark Monument pays tribute to the Corps of Discovery that scouted the Missouri River to its source and found a viable route to the Pacific Ocean. We strolled by the Governors Mansion and the old Missouri Penitentiary on our way to the downtown area. Wed been told by several people that no trip to Jefferson City is complete without a stop at Central Dairy for ice cream, even if its 10:30 in the morning. It did not disappoint. ;) Thanks for treating us. Another great walk to give us capitol #41.
