Yesterday we visited the old Inca remains in the middle of Cusco - the temple of the sun. Unfortunately it wasnt all intact, as the Spanish Conquerors had a habit of building churches on top of their temples, and houses on top of their walls, after stealing their stone. The temple of the moon, and the temple of the stars fared ok, and we could see the individual room layouts, as well as several meters high of imperial inca style walls. The incas built using just square cut slabs of stone, stacked perfectly close to each other using no cement or clay, yet there isnt even enough room between stones for a pin. They also built all their walls on a 13degree angle - this meant their structures moved WITH earthquakes and left them intact.. The Spanish who build their structures using inca foundation walls werent so lucky when there was earthquakes all the new buildings collapsed leaving only the inca walls. Suckers. After the temple we made our way down to a big local mercado. This was mostly food, and tbh smelt DISGUSTING. Animal heads and hearts in stalls next to sacks of ground quinoa or fresh cilantro. Weirdest thing was a lady skinning a frog. Ew. There was however a whole section of juice bars! After confirming they used bottled water we all set about ordering fresh juices and smoothies. Orange and mango, yum. After the mercado we went back to the central plaza, because close by was a chocolate house! This is like a Lindt cafe or Max Brenners, only with strange South American flavours. You could also buy chocolate Chapstick, chocolate body spray, chocolate pens etc. it was crazy. After the chocolate house we were to visit another cathedral/church. But by this stage I was a little more than sick of churches, and was feeling sick in general, so I went back to our hotel. Unfortunately I spent nearly the next 6 hours throwing up. I had to skip the group dinner and was still up when Stephen got back from the salsa club at nearly midnight. Hopefully this stomach issue goes away soon.
