Yesterday we went to Monument Valley, which you may recognize from the movies, westerns and most recently the Transformer movies. Monument Valley is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation (the largest Indian Reservation in the US) and similar to the National Parks system you pay a fee to enter the reservation. Once again the view was breathtaking. There is only one hike of 3.3 miles around West Mitten Bute, which we did. It was an relatively easy walk, but very (loose) sandy so you get a bit of a workout. After our hike we booked a private tour of Monument Valley with a Navajo guide by the name of Jones. You can do the drive yourself, but if you go with a guide they will take you into the private back country of Monument Valley which is off limits to everyone else. We got to see some amazing sandstone formations, but what was more exciting was asking all about Native American culture. He was happy to answer any questions we asked. My favorite was when I asked whether they have some type of christening ceremony for a new born baby. He said they have a babys first laugh gathering. After the baby starts to laugh. :) How cute is that! Bryan had booked us in for the night at the Monument View hotel so we watched the sun go down from our room
