Yesterdays Minneapolis Star-Tribune Business Section had an excellent op-ed on risk analysis that used Bakken oil transport and Polymet hard rock sulfide mining as examples. The writer is a 40 year veteran of risk assessment. All endeavors have risks involved, he notes, but the question is one of whether those risks are acceptable or not. In the case of transport of Bakken oil in old-style tanker cars, the risks are no longer acceptable. In the case of Polymet, the question is whether the risks can be managed over the entire lifetime of the project, not only its short mining stage.
