We should note, however, that the enormous authority given to his followers is to be wielded within the same framework of constraints Christ places on his own authority: whether used in the Church, or in our vocations, it is to be exercised in humility, not for the sake of the wielder, and always for the building of the Kingdom. I realize in retrospect that I was not clear enough in my references to the events in Ferguson, MO. While we do not fully know the details surrounding the killing of Michael Brown, whether this specific case is proven to be an example of abuse of authority or not, it certainly points to a problem of abuse of authority which is felt far too often by African Americans.
