Yikes! It has been a few days since this happened so I can share this now. Right after it happened it was more than I wanted to admit. Recently I saved everything I had on my computer, I thought, onto my external hard drive. I was running out of space on my mac mini. But a day or so later I noticed it all back on my computer even though I thought I had deleted the files after saving them. Thinking it had something to do with the time machine settings I thought perhaps I should find out before I messed with it again. Then one morning several weeks later I got up to a computer notice that my hard drive was full. So I deleted a lot of stuff thinking it was all saved on my external hard drive. A few days after that I opened my tree software and it had no tree info in it. I clicked on my external hard drive to pull the ftm files back out and they were not there. So I retrieved everything on my time machine back up from about ten days ago and dumped it into a folder on my external hard drive. Then moved the FTM file from my external hard drive to my mac mini and when I clicked on my tree software my tree was back. Since I have a family history and not a strict family tree it was good to see my 5868 individuals with the media files that go with them where they belong in my family tree maker. Even being in sync with ancestry would not get my complete file back on my computer if I had not been able to retrieve it. I took a few tums while I was solving this crisis. Perhaps some can empathize with my agony I experienced while I was dealing with this, it took hours to dump the time machine on to the external hard drive during which time I wasnt sure it would work out okay or not.
