Yoga tip for today: BENEFITS OF UTTITHA TRIKONASANA/EXTENDED TRIANGLE POSE This posture hides its complexity in its familiarity and grounded stance. But, it is actually affecting all the main muscle groups of the body to build symmetry, balance, strength, flexibility, and good posture. In it, the spine is laterally flexed, the legs are apart and engaged, the pelvis is tilted and hips gently opened, the chest is turning and opening with assistance from the spinal muscles and the shoulders are expanding. Depending on the gaze and arm variation you take, different strengthening and stretching also occurs in the neck and arms. Here are the main physical effects: 1) Strengthens the quadriceps (both legs), the psoas portion of the iliopsoas muscle (deep abdominal muscle- both sides), internal oblique abdominal muscles (upper side), external oblique abdominal muscles (down side), erector spinal and quadratus lumborum muscles- thoracic and spinal extensors (down side), rhomboids (between shoulders), serratus anterior muscle- connects ribcage to upper back and shoulder blade, sternocleidomastoid -the prominent neck muscle (down side), muscles around the inner ankles and on the bottom of the feet 2) Stretches the hamstrings, and calf muscles of both legs, the inner thigh muscles of the front leg, gluteals and outer hip muscles of back leg, internal oblique abdominal muscles (down side), external oblique abdominal muscles (upper side), erector spinal and quadratus lumborum muscles- thoracic and lumbar extensors (upper side), pectoralis- chest muscles, anterior deltoids- upper arm muscles, sternocleidomastoid -the prominent neck muscle (upper side), the muscles on the top of the feet and along the outer ankle/foot in the back leg. 3) Prevents osteoporosis through weight bearing. 4) Opens the chest thereby improving the quality and efficiency of respiration. 5) The effects on the spine can relieve back, sciatic and neck pain. 6) Improves digestion Tomorrow, I will discuss the energetic aspects of this posture.
