Yom Hashoah Today, April 28th, 2014, marks the 55th anniversary of Yom Hashoah, known as Holocaust Remembrance Day in English. Yom Hashoah, roughly translated, means “Day of the Whirlwind.” In Israel, Yom Hashoah is celebrated with speeches, commemorations, prayers, singing, and the lighting of torches and candles. However, every Remembrance Day, at 10:00 am, air raid sirens ring out, and for two minutes, the entire nation of Israel is silent from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea. We here at Church in the City–Beth Abraham would like to ask that at 10:00 am this morning you would please observe a moment of silence, contemplation, and prayer. If it is not possible for you (or you see this too late) please try to do this sometime during the course of the day. Speaking of Israel in Isaiah 43, The Bible says, “I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” This has literally become true. 50 million people died in World War II to pave the way for the people of Israel to go home. But do not focus solely on the evil of the Holocaust, though we understand that it is important to remember this. Rather, please focus on God’s promises to both Israel and the world, and remember that his love and mercy for his children endures forever. Thank you all, and may the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob bless you wherever you are. We will not forget what has passed, nor will we forget the promises of the Lord.
