Yoruba Department for Homeland Security Issues Travel Warning for Arewa North: The Yoruba Department for Homeland Security warned Yoruba citizens traveling to or living in Arewa Republic to defer non-essential travel to North-West and North-East of Nigeria at this time due to the continuing possibility of political and social unrest. On July 01, 2013, the Department of Homeland Security authorized the departure of a limited number of non-emergency employees and family members. Yoruba citizens were urged to remain alert to local security developments and to be vigilant regarding their personal security. This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Alert issued for North-West and North-East Nigeria dated April 15, 2011. Political unrest, which intensified prior to the presidential election in April 2011 and the determination of the Hausa/Fulani to use civil war and or military coup to take over from President Jonathan, is likely to continue in the near future due to unrest focused on the Gambari’s assumption of office. While brutal killings have occurred in major metropolitan areas, including downtown Borno State, Yobe state and Adamawa state, the security situation in most other areas, including Gigawa state, Kaduna state and Sokoto state, continues to be calm. Of specific concern is a rise in ethnic-based killings in and around North-East regions where 10 Yoruba citizens have been the specific targets as recently as last Friday. Yoruba Homeland Department of Security strongly urged Yoruba citizens to avoid the North of Nigeria.
