You all know I couldnt be more proud of Hong Kong, but heres a couple of thoughts on the protests, here me out: Yes, I believe democracy is our fundamental right and I support taking action about it. Yes, the police are using forceful crowd controlling techniques (tear gas and pepper spray) - in my whole life Ive never seen a protest of this magnitude, which is a big thing to say as believe me Hong Kongers like to protest A LOT. No, I dont believe its right that everyone vehemently denounces the police for violent actions. Im especially disappointed at the BBC links that everyone is sharing, with scenes deliberately portraying police officers as distopian military gun men. Whilst I support the pro-democracy protests, I think its totally unfair that the public blame and target the police as their enemies. Actually, its absolutely heartbreaking. Both of my parents are police officers and have worked their entire careers to ensure the safety of Hong Kong, the police force are world class, and now in this time of conflict they are labelled as the enemy because theyre carrying out their duties of keeping the peace? If you were the commissioner of police, what would you have them do? Sit around and shout angrily at the mob blocking the entirety of the Admiralty / Central high street? Just for a second imagine if this happened in China. There are student sat doing there homework in the streets amongst the protests, is that not testament to the quality of freedom these protests have been given?
