You are either with or against the Catholic Church, there is no middle ground (See Mt 12:30) I really enjoy the lively discussions on Face Book, because of them I have found out there are literally hundreds of devout, orthodox Catholics and strong believers of other faiths, who are now my friends. Religion stirs lively discussion. For instance, I believe that the Catholic Church is the true Church of the God-man, Jesus Christ. And so do most of my friends. I also believe that Catholic Intellectual Culture is the greatest culture in the world. I believe these things beyond the shadow of a doubt, and without reservation or compromise. Yet I recognize that many (even some men and women of good will) see the Catholic Church as corrupt, rooted in paganism, intellectually repressive, guilty of the slaughter and torture of many. Its clergymen are lust driven, greedy, and lazy; its lay people are superstitious and not to bright. Its institutions are harbors of the worst perversions. These are all the perceptions of the ignorant. In some cases they are the hallucinations of the venomously deluded, while in in others they genuinely honest observations based on misinformation. In between these opposing views are many who are indifferent and could not care less. Nevertheless, we can see that such diametrically opposed “world views” would make for lively discussions. So when I see these opinions, so different from mine, it has an immediate effect on me. I sit up straight, smile at the many icons and statues of my friends the saints, look at my large private library, stretch and flex my 28 phalanges, and start posting. As the French say: “Laissez les bon temps rouler!” Does your religious community or irreligious community foster discussion about these opposing views?
