The aggrieved students also alleged police culpability in the crisis, this was contained in a communique issued to the university authority. The students also make good their threat by sending a letter their elected representatives accusing them of gross misconduct and insensitivity during and after the crisis. The SUG was conspicuously was advised to resign owing to his role in the crisis. The letter is published here in part, “Mr. President, on Wednesday 12 of June, 2013, our great institution was in the news, not for scientific discovery, not because one of her students’ won a national or international laurel or any positive historic development but for very negative, sad and highly regrettable reasons; killings, deaths, arson, looting, carnage, rampage, simply put: for anarchy and appalling, nefarious and sadistic happenings”. Mr Inibehe Effiong, a 5oo level student of Faculty of Law who authored the letter had described the SUG president as lacking in charisma to dialogue with institution management to have forestall the then looming crisis. According to Mr Inibehe, ”Under your watch, the student community of our Ivory Towers had engaged the University management in an unpalatable war, like sheep’s without a shepherd. The result of which are manifestly deleterious and inconsistent with the Vision and Mission Statement of our great University; the wasting of the blood of Kingsley Udoette, a two hundred level student of the Department of Zoology, the burning of the offices of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Exams and Records (very painful) and other structures and vehicles in the University, the arrest and detention of students, the denting of the University’s image and the suspension of academic activities amongst other adversarial consequences speaks volume of the magnitude of calamity that has befallen our great institution under your watch as SUG President. A COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE GENERAL CONGRESS OF THE NIGERIAN STUDENTS’ RIGHT’S MOVEMENT HELD ON WEDNESDAY JULY 3, 2013 Arising from the General Congress of the Nigerian Students’ Right’s Movement held on Wednesday July 3, 2013, in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State Capital, various salient issues were deliberated upon. The centre stage of the deliberation was the June 12, Crisis that erupted in the university of Uyo. The Congress observed the following: 1. 1. That the June 12 Crisis in the University was not provoked by the students of the University. 1. 2. That students were indiscriminately arrested from the male hostel along Udi Street in Uyo(outside the University’s premises) and on the road. 1. 3. That the institution management and the Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University did not take any proactive and effective measures to intervene in the crisis. 1. 4. That following the crisis, the life of an innocent student (Kingsley Udoette from the Department of Zoology) was wasted, sensitive structures, facilities and documents of the University were destroyed, also students who were accommodated in hostels were stranded as the management ordered them to vacate immediately. 1. 5. That the arrested students were taken to the Police Station and are now being held in prison under inhuman conditions based on “withholding charge” emanating from the order of the Magistrates’ Court, which ipso facto does not have jurisdiction to entertain the charges preferred against them. Sequel to the above, the Congress hereby, while condoling with the family of the deceased, and expressing sadness over the wanton destruction of the school facilities and sudden disruption in the academic calendar, makes the following resolutions and demands: i. That the students held in custody be released forthwith unconditionally. ii. That all those whose leadership failure resulted in the crisis be held accountable and made to face disciplinary measures to serve as deterrent to others. iii. The Congress hereby passes a vote of no confidence on Mr. Lucky Imoh Inyang, the President of the Students’ Union Government of University of Uyo, and also demands his immediate resignation from office. iv. That the killer(s) of Kingsley Udoette be identified and brought to justice and the family duly compensated. CONCLUSION : It is our humble belief that relevant authorities will give hat relevant authorities will give proper consideration to the above demands in the interest of justice, equity and fair play.
