You are not your thoughts and feelings and...you do no have to be driven or tyranized by them. As you practice focusing whatever you are giving primary attention to in your meditation practice, you are likely to come to see your thoughts and feelings as discrete, short-lives events, much like individual waves on the ocean. These waves arise in awareness for a moment and then recede. You can watch them and perceive them as discrete events on the field of your consciousness. They come, and they go. And when they go, they are - for that moment at least - gone. If not, they fed, they dissolve, and for that moment, you are free. -Jon kabat-zinn (Thanks, katie g)
