You are welcome to join us for our next Performance & Moving Image Arts Research Seminar on Thursday 20 November, 5 - 6 pm in Babbage 215 (free for all and no need to book) HEART presented by John Matthews Its 2002. Off the coast of the Dominican Republic, a world-famous husband and wife attempt a record-breaking deep-sea single breath dive. She will descend over 500 feet, he will be waiting for her at the surface. As she descends her heart rate will drop, as it does when bodies conserve oxygen, and his will rise, as it often may in anxious spouses. When she surfaces seven minutes later a heart-pounding drama begins which runs to the present day, and through which seven centuries of claims for the hearts centrality to the emotional life of humans will be exposed and tested. HEART analyses the physical and symbolic correspondence between the human heart and human emotion, and the politics of the heart as a truth-organ in a culture restlessly in search of a sense of authenticity. HEART is derived from John Matthews new book, Anatomy of Performance Training, which investigates the practical and symbolic role of body parts in training practice in order to argue that, we train because we are human and we become human because we train.
