You bring up some interesting musings from experience. Churches services are typically a collaboration of church leaders within the confines of a theme, the sermon of the day. Music is a large part in many churches, more so than others, but typically performed under those confines. Artistic expression maybe appreciated, or it may seem even sacrilegious to some. I believe if you were to study African-American churches, expression is largely encouraged as a Godly gift. The influence of gospel music, for instance, is found throughout modern pop and rock music. Yet, there are people who would listen to contemporary music, but draw a line if the music played in church is even close to that sound. Closing ourselves to artistic expression, we are closing ourselves to Godly expression. Fortunately, this is mostly generational. Just some thoughts from someone from the unnamed generation before baby boomers.
