You cant just finish a cruise, come into Athens and catch a plane home. Better to get a great bed and breakfast in the Plaka district with a view of the Parthenon and stay a couple of days. From Hadrians gate to Parliament with their Greek honor guard in their ancient uniforms to the Acropolis to an even higher Lycabettus Hill are wonderful to see. The unemployment rate for youth in Greece is >50 %, so we were delighted to do the free four hour walking tour of Athens led by a young and knowledgeable college grad. It is difficult to imagine a country whose economy is in the tank and the cost of maintaining, not to mention, restoring all of these ancient treasures. Most of the modern days businesses are built on top of the ancient city. Standing on Mars Hill and looking down on Athens, reminded me of Paul and his address to the wise men of Athens on the same spot. The food was great, but at last it was time to go home. On to Munich, Chicago and finally Raleigh. Now to work on Uganda trip for January. Then, maybe , talk Becky into a southeast Asia trip next year. Travelogue complete.
