You do not know how much I have missed you and the children my dear Mary...to be alone in a crowd is very solitary. In the woods I feel sympathy with the trees and birds, in whose company I take delight, but experience no pleasure in a strange crowd.--Robert E Lee 1839 Writing from Louisville in route to St. Louis. A modern day emblem for the South people do not know he spent much of his life all over the country in military service including several years in Brooklyn. While away in the foreign land of Mexico, or chasing Indians in Texas, or engineering projects in Missouri or amongst the crowds of New York City his heart was always at Arlington. The line to be alone in a crowd is very solitary. is something this West Virginia boy has experienced all too much in the city. I miss my homeland.
