You dont understand, my mother is Filipino. Pearls words are resounding in my head.. She stepped out of the school bus with a long face. I knew something was off. Her gait was slow and hesitant. She told me her school journal is missing. I asked if she reported it to her teacher. (And she did.) I assured her that it will show up. Not to worry. I did not get upset with her. Half an hour later after she got home, I received a phone call from her teacher informing me (and Pearl) that the missing journal was found. She then proceeded to tell me the conversation that she and Pearl had. And what Pearl told her-- the above statement. Which caused the teacher and I to burst in laughter. I used to be a fun person. I am no longer. Well, not so much these days. The balancing act on how to be a good parent in which you try to instill good values while maintaining that fun factor is utterly daunting of a task. I am encouraged by the positive feedback from her teachers and strangers alike by how my Pearl interacts and behaves, and how amazing she is-- that somehow what I am doing is right. However, I know I can do better. She is teaching me. And I do try to pay attention. I hope I wont fail her (and her sister).
