FFS :( Corrupt former ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald will be allowed to keep potentially millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded superannuation, even if they are convicted and jailed. Premier Barry OFarrell is refusing to commit to proposed changes that would allow Parliament to strip the pair of their entitlements, worth more than $100,000 a year for life, following the damning findings against them. Opposition Leader John Robertson wants to amend laws governing the state politicians super scheme after it emerged former state MPs are entitled to keep their pension even if convicted of a serious criminal offence. The Independent Commission Against Corruption found Mr Obeid and Mr Macdonald acted corruptly by conspiring to rig a tender for a mining exploration licence on land owned by the Obeid family at Mount Penny in the states west. It asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to consider laying criminal charges against the pair. But even if they are charged, convicted and jailed, Mr Obeid and Mr Macdonald remain entitled to their pensions because they can only be suspended or stripped from MPs who have serious criminal proceedings begun against them while in office. It was previously believed former MPs could be stripped of their pension if convicted of a serious crime after leaving office but the scheme manager, Pillar Administration, said this was not the case. Mr Macdonald quit Parliament in 2010 and Mr Obeid in 2011. As a result Mr Obeid is entitled to a pension of about $120,000 a year for life and Mr Macdonald about $145,000.
