You have this asset we might call, after physics, ‘degrees of freedom’. This ‘stuff’ is what gets invested in thoughts, concepts, activities, perceptions in order to ‘make sense’ of them... manipulate them... or, more commonly, to be manipulated »by the investment and the losses and repercussions that thereby obtain. We can learn the ladder of investment (or loss) in unique ways. Language is one of those ways. So, too, mathematics. Concepts. Naming. In any case, in their nascent state, your degrees of freedom are (at least potentially) infinite in certain domains. We use a »system to collapse them into ideas and meaning. The system is incomplete. Which is part of why it works. The supercontainer (what we think reality is) is the first collapse. Our senses of our role and context are the second collapse. Usually most degrees are simply thrown away here. The next is our senses of purpose or purposive character. Then we get into minutiae. Representations. Concepts. Frameworks. Languages. All of those are inflected by the first three collapses, and, indeed, recapitulate (re-collapse) their remaining degrees of freedom to produce fictions and focus. Both. The point is this: with each step, we are investing potentials ... developmental and instant... according to a schema »we have not learned to recognize. And recognizing this fact... becomes a method of retrieving degrees of freedom even in the contexts that ordinarily proscribe, inhibit or prohibit this. That is our nature. And our nature, with understanding... is prodigy.
