You have to love being a Mason and having Liberal Arts as a college major. Criticism of monarchy, especially absolute monarchy, began at the end of the 17th century with the emergence of the Enlightenment, which affected values and beliefs in Europe and the Americas. The Enlightenment was a cultural movement sparked by prominent philosophers, including Locke, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Spinoza, who began to question the long-standing belief that truth and knowledge flowed from divine sources. They argued that humankind was rational and, thus, capable of learning and understanding on their own without religious help. It became a conflict between religion and nature—mans own ability to understand and know based on evidence. What began as a cultural movement soon became popular in politics, leading to both political and social reform. From the Enlightenment came liberalism and an interest in democracy, a regime type that placed political power in the hands of ordinary people. - From the book Cross Cultural Perspectives by David Mislan
