You know, Im a fan of several celebrities. Robin Williams tops the list, but Christopher Titus, Whoopie Goldberg, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Stephen King, Weird Al, Nichelle Nichols, Dan Ackroyd...and many others. I just found out that at least one of the celebrities I like has multiple Facebook pages with their stage name. Now, I could send them a friend request, in addition to liking their fan pages. However, I choose not to. While I would love to be considered their friend, Im not - Im just a fan. I realize this difference, and respect it. Why am I saying something about this. Simple: I believe that everyone deserves some time off. Everyone, including celebrities. And I feel that if a celebrity is off the clock so to speak, they should be left alone. Fans should not show up at their homes, paparazzi should not stalk them through the grocery store, anything like that. I think that if they are more than a reasonable distance from their performance area, call it 100 yards, they should be left alone. If they have a non-home office, thats an okay contact point. If theyre out to dinner, let them eat in peace. Ive met a few celebrities in person, outside their work area and personally, Ive typically just gone Youre so-and-so, love your work. I also asked Annie Potts to autograph my copy of Corvette Summer, and she was gracious and wonderful. But she was in town performing, and I asked her at the theater. Saw her a couple more times around town, and left her the hell alone. Met Rodney Carrington at my job as a gas station cashier one time. He was cool, friendly, and gave me an autographed t-shirt. But I didnt push it, I just recognized him and said I enjoyed his stuff, then got a free t-shirt. He rocks. So, while I would love to do more than like the fan pages of some celebrities, I dont think fans should intrude on their personal lives, on their friendships, even if they allow it. However, if they want to send me a friend request, Ill more than gladly accept it.
