You know how we all get that same old worn out phrase thrown at us, Gringo, go home.... Well, this happened to me awhile back and it still feels like Ive been hit in the gut. I had been friends (i suppose acquaintance would be a better word after what happened) with this Brazilian girl about two years before moving to Brazil. We werent in constant touch, but I could see she was following my life in Brazil. (She still lives in the U.S.) Anyway, I simply shared an article about how folks tend to give directions here. It was meant to be funny, and after reading it again and again, I still dont think anything was offensive in it. As you can see in the image capture, she had already UNFRIENDED me because of the post. Like minutes after!! I dont even know what to think. Her unfriending me seriously messed me up for days (well weeks) because I just dont understand. I THOUGHT she was a real friend. I mean, I understand this intolerance happens, but I dont GET IT emotionally. I know it is called bairrismo which means that they can say crap about things here and its ok, but a foreigner simply needs to zip it! I can accept sarcasm and not so nice things said about my home, the US. I can laugh at it. I can laugh at myself when things are TRUE.-- I heard that the episode of Simpsons that made fun of Brazil was actually taken off the air here bc they couldnt handle it. Can any Brazilians explain exactly WHY this bairrismo exists? This subject comes up so often on this site, but no one really answers WHY they cant laugh at the stuff.
