You know, so many diseases we read about, live with, or have a loved one suffering from; all of which are equally important and impact our lives in so many ways. Other than Cancer and Alzheimers (both of which have taken family from us), I also think there is another ugly disease that sometimes gets misdiagnosed, and also can be life threatening, one which I suffer from daily, and thats Asthma. I have lived with asthma my entire life, some years worse than others. Like other diseases, asthma is a life altering disease. You never know when you will suffer an attack; therefore, you must be prepared. This disease gets overlooked and passed on as anxiety in so many instances, as did mine last night. I am a nurse, so I can honestly say I see this happen and my heart breaks for those that have ever gone through what I did last night. I went into a full blown asthma attack last night, and after several attempts of my rescue inhaler, I knew I needed to get to the ER. AnYone, who has ever had trouble breathing know its the scariest feeling not being able to get any air; therefore. We panic (which I did), and went into a full blown panic attack. On the way to the ER, Joey had to stop because I had hyperventilated to the point of almost passing out, so half way there he called 911. The way I was treated by the ambulance service just makes me sick! What should have taken them 10-15 minutes to get to the ER, took 30 minutes. Instead of treating my asthma symptoms, for the first 10 minutes they questioned if my boyfriend and I had been fighting causing my panic attack. Long story short after I told them I was a nurse and he had better give me a breathing treatment and get me to the ER, he decided to call the hospital 5 minutes away. Point if my story is they delayed my treatment which could have been detrimental. My attack was blown off as a panic attack. I followed up with my m.d. Today who debated on hospitalizing me because of what most medical workers dont stop to think about which is my prolonged expiratory phase which, in my case, landed me in the hospital once before. My point is, just because the symptoms are classic (hypoxia, audible wheezing, etc) doesnt mean its not there. Please as you would any other disease, take this disease just as serious.
