You know that moment in The Great Gatsby when Daisy cries because - TopicsExpress

You know that moment in The Great Gatsby when Daisy cries because she’s so overwhelmed by all the new crisp expensive shirts Gatsby shows her? I have read different interpretations, but I think the pervasive interpretation is point blank: Daisy is shallow. Materialism moves her to tears. Anyway. This sudden urge to write sprung upon me as I folded my designer tights. I would like to argue--perhaps in a bit of a defense for Daisy--that fashion can be moving. Fashion makes an impact on our lives. Our clothes can represent who we were in a particular time and place. Clothes can be a reflection of who we are today and who we were yesterday. And sometimes, seeing it anew can be overwhelming. I remember purchasing them: one of those “must have” basic items found in every girl’s closet. Perhaps I have a wild imagination, but when I purchase clothes, in my mind I’m accessorizing. I wonder all the different ways that one piece will fit into numerous styles. What can I say? I’ve been reading fashion magazines since middle school. Today, however, it saddened me at how worn out they looked. The color lacked luster, the threading frayed here and there, and unsightly lint sprinkled throughout the crotch and rear-end regions! Now, I may be attacked for being materialistic like Daisy. But the truth is I could not care less about the monetary value of the pants, nor could I say that these pants keep me up-to-date on trends. Truth is, it saddened me because to me these worn out pants symbolized how quickly life is moving ahead for me. And like the pants, I am afraid of how worn out I’m becoming. What do I have to do to slow down and keep the things I want in tact? So it’s sort of ironic, that when I first purchased them, I looked to the future into the vast possibilities. The different styles; the different events; the life I would live in them. And then the future hits you, and nostalgia hits. Perhaps Daisy, for at least one poignant moment in the whole novel, saw her past and future fall upon her. Perhaps, that’s what made her cry.
