You know that person in your life that has been in our life for so long that there doesnt seem a time that she wasnt there, even when there were 18 years before you met her. That person who became so a part of you that she became family. She was in your sisters wedding. She flew around the world to be at your wedding. You flew around the world to be in hers. She named her daughter after you. She dropped everything to be with you and your family when your momma passed, her adopted momma, even when she now has a family of her own, the cost of the trip is back breaking, not to mention the hours and hours of travel is not fun. But the grieving process would not have been right without her cuddled in a big chair with your baby brother making him smile after he lost his mother. The years pass with emails and Facebook posts and random Skype sessions. And no matter how many years pass, you remember those days when she was in your life everyday in a way you couldnt fathom existing without that sisterhood there for the taking. And you know, you kinda havent existed quite the same in all the years shes been so far away. And then shes there. For a few days, shes there. And the years melt away and you drink and eat and shop and talk and laugh and watch her daughters figure skating performances on an iPad and talk about her sons tae kwon do. As you do, you can taste it in your mouth how much you want to be there, close, through all that but youll take the shaky home videos on the iPad and the stories. Youll take anything. Then the days shes going to be there dwindle and you know youll have to say yet another good-bye and you wonder how you will exist without her in your life every day. Youll find a way. But itll suck. That girl for me, my fearless, fun-loving, deep-feeling Ally Nightingale, is in the shower. So I write this and then Im off to squeeze out every minute of joy at having her here every day...for a while. If you have a sister like that, of the blood or of the heart, tell her you love her today. And if youre lucky enough, give yourself and her a moment and fold her in your arms like you wont ever let her go. Rock on.
