You know, the British are not terribly thrilled when an American attempts a British accent. I think its because we tend to do a caricature of it because we can master only the gross motor elements of their speech. So we tend to sound like a Cockney doing an extreme impression of a Cockney. (Actually, the real reason they get irritated because we do it better than them. :-) ) I have Brit friends who sometimes do their American accents for me, and actually do it quite well. Im always charmed. But they often tend to sound a bit southern and maybe theyre having the same problem. The southern American accent is our most obvious version. Fine-tuning it to the midwestern news anchorman accent would be more difficult. BTW, Hugh Laurie (Dr. House), does American very well.
