You know, torture should be a very sore spot for those of us who are Christians, and yet the churches in their outright approval or in their silence have been complicit in torture by our government and military. Jesus, himself, was a victim of state sponsored torture and execution. We can read about it in our scriptures in all of its gory detail, how he was beaten, humiliated, tormented, and endured excruciating pain until he died. And in his message, Jesus stressed the inherent dignity of all human being and the importance of loving each person as a precious child of God. And we hear of him identifying with all those who suffer—the homeless, the hungry, the prisoners. “In as much as you have done it to these, you have done so to me.” And so when we, as a nation, have done these things, when we torture, we are doing it to the very one that some of us call the Christ, the Messenger, the Anointed One! -Steve Van Kuiken
