You know your from Anacortes when a massive thunderstorm floods - TopicsExpress

You know your from Anacortes when a massive thunderstorm floods the street in front of your house in about 5 minutes at dinner time overwhelming the drainage system and creating a lake about 50 yards long and 8 or nine inches deep ... AND you jump up from the table and run barefoot out into the mud-puddle and remember how much fun you had playing in mud-puddles as a kid. Maureen, Ben and I waded in, all barefoot, and cleared the storm drains that filled up with leaves and tons of the stuff that Maple trees drop this time of year and it was so fun. All the neighbors were out. While Anacortes seldom had thunderstorms, it sure had mud-puddles. I Avenue wasnt paved on the block in front of our house and there were some huge mud puddles. Jimmy Osborne, Steve Smith, Mike Bullock and I (not all at once) made little plywood hydroplanes in my dads shop and wed tie them to our bikes and swerve around through the mud-puddles making them skim along the surface of the puddles. Rather than underground sewage systems there were culverts which, as you all know, were sort of like little creeks running down the block. Another great place to walk barefoot in the rushing water, then would come Spring and thered be frogs eggs to find, then pollywogs, then frogs. Who hasnt collected frogs eggs and grew them into frogs. When I was even younger I was able to crawl into the cement pipes that went under driveways. Fun, magical times ... but last night was pretty magical too. The only unfortunate part of it was that Maureen and I had spent nearly 5 hours the day before with the pressure washer, rake, shovel and push broom cleaning up all that debris from our sidewalks, driveway, and all along the curb. Barrels full of it. A Spring Cleaning chore over here. Now it looks like we didnt do anything. Ah well ... surely worth it.
