You love the history of Racine like I do? ..... and hate to see it depart? Every year another wonderful old building is torn down only to have another vacant lot ... Right? If us older people look back at good old Racine from when we were young. I am sure, we will see the fall of the neigborhood stores and even the wonderful downtown area was when the malls started be built. Yes, Elmwood was beautiful and that opening week was something to behold. But, looking back at it now, how many stores moved out there. We have dicussed this many times here on this site havent we. Yet history shows us what happened when people got a better deal from some big Chicago stores and the mom and pop stores could not compete anymore ..... and it isnt any different today. If we love our history here in Racine we need to start supporting these little mom and pop stores and resturants hardware stores again. Sure, I like to get a better deal today and now we have the internet to do shopping on but I know how good it feels to go into Nelsons dime store with my grandaughter and walk around the squeaky floors as she picks up everything to look at and I remember doing that as well when I was little - 60+ years ago ... how could I not buy something for her! Anyhow, I say all this to encourage us all to support these business that have lovingly kept up the old stores and businesses. Today, I stopped at the old Lincoln Bakery to eat with a bunch of folks my age and it was wonderful. We found out that this is a family run business and the family all work there. Momma dids the cooking today and the kids waited on tables. Now think about that! ... It is still is happening here ... We just have to look and support. .... Right? ..... before for it is all gone.
